Cristiano Ronaldo is set to start the season on the BENCH with Man Utd’s future still in doubt as Ten Hag picks top three

CRISTIANO RONALDO faces a humiliating assignment on the bench as his future at Manchester United is still in doubt.

The 37-year-old star missed the Bangkok and Australian tour due to family reasons and has since played just 45 minutes in Sunday’s draw against Rayo Vallecano.

That’s not enough for boss Erik ten Hag to start him in Sunday’s Prem opener at home against Brighton.

Ten Hag wants to stay with the front three of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford who served him so well on the pre-season tour.

That means even if Ronaldo is on the cutting edge, he could be benched.

And it won’t go down well because he was furious in March when interim boss Ralf Rangnick ousted him for the Manchester City derby.

Rangnick told Ronaldo he would be a substitute in the game, which United lost 4-1.

But an angry Ronaldo then picked up an injury and flew to Portugal.

On Sunday, the former Real Madrid forward had a sideline dispute with Ten Hag during a break in the game against Vallecano.

He was then the only player to come on at half-time.

And he left Old Trafford with team-mate Diogo Dalot, who was not in the squad, about ten minutes from the end of the game rather than attend Ten Hag’s debriefing in the dressing rooms.

Ronaldo wants out just 12 months after his return from Juventus.

United are refusing to sell or even quote a price for the player, who has an additional 12 months on his contract with an option for an extra year.

His frustrated agent Jorge Mendes has told the club he has struck a deal if they say what they want for him.

United are refusing to budge while Ronaldo is desperate for a move that can be completed by the end of the week.

The club also confirmed Tom Huddlestone, 35, as player-manager for the Under-21 side.

He will succeed Paul McShane.
