CRISTIANO RONALDO is a big doubt for Ralf Rangnick’s debut for Manchester United on Sunday with a knee injury.
Ronaldo’s absence will be a huge shock to Rangnick, who yesterday vowed to get the best out of the 36-year-old superstar.
Sources at United say the Portuguese talisman may have injured his knee performing his trademark celebratory dance after scoring the winning goal on Thursday 3-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford.
However, Ronaldo continued to play and even ran the whole field at the end of the game when United jumped up. He was eventually substituted in the 88th minute and walked awkwardly across the pitch.
There were concerns that Ronaldo would struggle to fit in Rangnick’s high pressing style but the new boss vowed to deploy him first.
Rangnick, person facing Crystal Palace tomorrow, said: “You always have to adapt your style or idea of football to the players you have available, not the other way around.
“Watching Cristian take on Arsenal in the second half at the age of 36, he is an incredible top professional player.
“At his age, I have never seen a player with such good physicality. He is still a player who can easily make the difference.
“So yeah, it’s about how we can develop the whole team, not just Cristiano. We play in the most competitive league in the world so we need all the players on board.
“What I see from Cristiano, he is willing to do that, to put his opinion into the team. His teammates will have to do the same.”
Rangnick won’t have much time to present his ideas before tomorrow’s home game against Palace.
He said: “I can’t do much with the players who have played against Arsenal because I need to make sure they have enough power and fuel in the tanks for Sunday’s game, so in terms of We can’t really exercise physically.
“So the only way to help them and give them a clear input is spiritually, involving energy.
“The game against Arsenal in the second half showed that the whole team has enough energy.
“Of course it’s about the video footage, showing them the right situations, letting them know what they can do better to help the team get out of their own box – stuff like that.”
