Crisis club Barcelona needs half a billion euros to avoid financial ruin, warns the club’s economic president

According to Economic Vice President Eduard Romeu, BARCELONA needs half a billion euros in order not to slide into financial ruin.

The LaLiga giants have been in a meltdown in recent seasons largely due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and have regularly asked top earners to accept significant pay cuts.

Barca even allowed Lionel Messi to resign against his will in the summer of 2021 as the club could no longer afford his £1million-plus wages.

And now Romeu has revealed the full extent of the club’s troubles, insisting that just €500m (£425m) can ‘save Barcelona’.

Romeu told Sport: “It’s still critical but the advantage compared to a year ago is that we know where we are and we’ve recognized the problem.

“We know what the drama is.

“The number that does the most damage is that of hereditary imbalance.

“500 million euros negative funds.

“Some losses of €150m (£128m) could be added to that course if we do nothing.

“I already said it one day, if someone wants to make a man out of me, give me 500 million euros.

“This is what we need to save Barca…”

Romeu blamed former president Josep Bartomeu for the club’s poor leadership and insisted that the club inherited the financial problems from the previous regime.

The club’s economic vice-president added: “The situation is as it is. It comes from heredity.

“Of the things that have been done and not done well and those that have not been done.

“If we talk about the modernization plan of the Espai Barca (Lager Nou), which is essential, it will cause, for example, three years with less ordinary income.”

Barcelona announced their ‘Espai Barca’ late last year, despite only just announcing a crippling £1.15bn in debt.

But club bosses are hoping the revolutionary new Nou Camp – now sponsored by Spotify in a naming rights deal estimated to be worth around £250million – will help ease their financial worries going forward.

A hotel, offices, bus parking lots and a pavilion with an ice rink are also planned.
