LONGER-TIME news anchor Craig Melvin broke down during his final segment on MSNBC as he announced his future with the network and the Today Show.

“I want to take a moment to thank my parents. My mom cultivated curiosity… which brought me here,” Melvin said, breaking down briefly.

“My father, who taught me hard work, is paying off. It’s not about how to start, it’s about how to finish. And my wife Lindsay, who has endured long days and short nights and last minute travel. The glue that really holds everything together.

“And thank you for letting me into your homes, your businesses, and your vehicles for an hour every day. I appreciate that you see the value of journalism,” he told viewers.

The network will bring in temporary hosts for Melvin’s 11 o’clock segment, Craig Melvin Reports, until they find a permanent replacement for him.

An MSNBC representative confirmed the lover departure of the anchor on March 14th.

Melvin has been with MSNBC for more than a decade.

In addition to his work at Craig Melvin Reports and Today, he was a weekday presenter and co-host of NBC’s Saturday Today.

Melvin also hosts Dateline, the syndicated version of NBC’s true crime series.

After graduating from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Melvin began his career as a news anchor at WIS News10, an NBC affiliate.

He moved to Washington, D.C Hosting for NBC’s WRC-TV in 2008 and taking on the role for Today in 2011.

As he advanced his career, Melvin won two Emmy Awards for his reporting at WIS and was also recognized as Best Anchor by the South Carolina Broadcaster’s Association.

Speaking of his career path, Melvin said, “It was tough, and it was tough for a couple of years. I’m sure that’s why a lot of people are leaving the business. But I loved it.

“I’ve always loved telling stories and I’ve always loved talking to people, but I’ve especially loved covering the news in my hometown because there’s no such thing.”

Another fan called out a “great anchor” as he said goodbye during Thursday’s Craig Melvin Reports edition.

His absence will come amid other changes to the channel’s lineup, including Stefanie Ruhlewho is switching to the nightly newscast and will take Brian Williams‘ place after his departure.
