Sunday’s clash between COVENTRY CITY and Rotherham has been canceled over concerns over the pitch.
It comes after the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens matches were played at the Ricoh Arena.
After a field inspection this afternoon, the game officials have classified the surface as unplayable for tomorrow’s championship game.
A statement from Sky Blues read: “Coventry City are extremely disappointed to confirm that Sunday’s game against Rotherham United has been postponed.
“Following an inspection by a senior match official on Saturday, the pitch at the Coventry Building Society Arena was ruled unsafe and unplayable.
“This follows an inspection carried out by the EFL and a local referee on Friday, which was also attended by manager Mark Robins and chief executive Dave Boddy.
“We are extremely frustrated that the pitch at the arena is not up to standard and share a great disappointment that fans, players and staff will feel that our inaugural home game has been postponed under these circumstances.
“The arena’s promised investment in a new pitch unfortunately did not materialize over the summer, compounded by concerts on the pitch and then huge use at last weekend’s Commonwealth Games.
“We appreciate the efforts of the Grounds Staff who work for the arena in difficult circumstances.”
