COVENTRY CITY have postponed their upcoming clash with Wigan Athletic due to an UNSAFE pitch.
The turf of the Coventry Building Society Arena has been badly damaged by the UK’s recent heatwaves.
It suffered further damage during the Commonwealth Games Rugby 7s so the City Championship opener against Rotherham was postponed.
And after another inspection by an EFL-appointed ‘agricultural company’, The Sky Blues were forced to postpone The Latics’ visit for next week on Tuesday.
A statement from the club read: “Coventry City are very disappointed to have to provide another update on the pitch at the Coventry Building Society Arena and to confirm the postponement of Tuesday’s home game against Wigan Athletic.
“On Thursday, an independent, internationally established research and agricultural company, commissioned by the EFL, assessed the playing field in the arena.
“They have experience at a number of international tournaments and stadiums in the UK and abroad.
“They determined the pitch would not be safe or playable for Tuesday’s game against Wigan Athletic.
“We had hoped that the pitch at the arena would have improved enough after last week’s postponements to continue our game against Wigan Athletic and had planned to do so.

“However, it is unfortunately clear that this is not possible and we are therefore forced to postpone Tuesday’s game against Wigan Athletic.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused to the fans, players and staff of Coventry City and Wigan Athletic and their fans, players and staff.
“We looked at the possibility of reversing the game, but unfortunately this was not possible due to other events at DW Stadium.”
