Epic has reportedly signed a deal with Paramount Pictures, the owners of the TMNT franchise. Could a crossover between the two be coming?
Unbeknownst to the players, the next major crossover for the Fortnite Item Shop may just be around the corner. After a year full of highly anticipated collaborations with blockbuster IPs like Marvel, Epic Games show no signs of slowing the momentum down anytime soon. Starting 2022 with a bang, Epic has reportedly signed a deal. According to Nick Baker, the co-founder of The XboxEra Podcast, sources have confirmed that an agreement between Epic and Paramount Pictures has been reached. This led to the rumor suggesting that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) are crossing over with the world’s most popular battle royale video game, Fortnite. Paramount Pictures also holds properties over such as Star Trek and Spongebob – who knows? Maybe we might even see the sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea. But for now, all eyes are focused on the TMNT crew.
TMNT Being Featured in Other Games isn’t New
If a Fortnite and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collab were to happen, it wouldn’t be the first time they appeared in a video game. They’ve already been previously featured as guest skins in a MOBA game called Smite. If we were to speculate on what led to this possible collaboration, it might have something to do with a promotion for the new TMNT game “Shredder’s Revenge” that’s coming out later this year. That being said, it’s highly plausible that the TMNT collab with Fortnite could be timed with the official launch of Shredder’s Revenge. Fortnite usually releases skin collaborations in their Fortnite Item Shop as a way to promote the skin’s game/movie anyway.
What TMNT is All About
TMNT is an entertainment franchise centered on four anthropomorphic turtle bros that are skillfully trained in martial arts that fight evil in New York. It began as a comic book in 1983 and grew into a popular and successful animated series in 1987. The show ran for almost a decade before Nickelodeon purchased the franchise in 2009 on behalf of Viacom. This resulted in TMNT getting an entirely new comic book series, two animated series, and two new live-action films. Considering that the turtles had multiple series and films, each with its distinct art style, Epic Games are pretty much spoiled for choice in terms of skin varieties for the rumored crossover.
No Firm Release Date of the Fortnite x TMNT
It’s important to remember that just because a collab doesn’t show in Fortnite right away, doesn’t mean it’s not coming at all. Perfect examples of crossovers for the battle royale that leaked early like Naruto and Ariana Grande took their sweet time getting into Fortnite; they were revealed months in advance of their actual release. It got to the point where many in the community felt that these collabs were simply scrapped due to how look it took for them to become official. For now, the Fortnite x TMNT collab may still be ways off, but chances are, with the help of some dataminers, we’ll find out more details about it within 2022.
Taking A Look At The Whole Picture
XboxEra’s host and co-founder Nick “Shpeshal” Baker revealed that a source told him that Paramount Pictures had signed a deal with Epic Games to bring its properties to Fortnite. Specifically, the main property that Baker heard about was TMNT, starring four humanoid tortoises with ninja skills that have an affinity for pizza. As per usual in these kinds of cases, nothing’s been officially confirmed yet and it can take a long time before they get implemented in the game. But while Baker referenced Paramount Pictures, it’s entirely plausible that ViacomCBS, which is Paramount’s parent company, has a hand in this situation. This is because ViacomCBS owns Paramount+, Nickelodeon, and the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.
There’s no official statement by the company or any of its parties and subsidiaries involved, but given how ViacomCBS owns Paramount and Nickelodeon, the possibility for Fortnite crossovers may extend beyond TMNT – we could even get Jimmy Neutron, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and other kinds of franchises in the realm of Nickelodeon. Plus, if we were to get the cast of Spongebob Squarepants in Fortnite, running around as Squidward with an assault rifle would be a concept that’s too absurd to miss out on.
