Corrie veterans Helen Worth and Antony Cotton receive MBEs for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

CORONATION Street became a land of soap and fame last night – as veterans Helen Worth and Antony Cotton received gongs for the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

The overjoyed couple are among dozens of entertainers – including MasterChef hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace – honored to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70th anniversary on the throne.

Helen, 71, said she was “delighted” to be awarded an MBE after playing Gail Platt on the ITV soap for almost 48 years.

She said: “It is truly wonderful to be honored for something I have enjoyed for so many years and I am particularly pleased to receive this award in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year.”

Antony, 46, who made his debut on the cobbles as Sean Tully in 2003, said he was “overwhelmed” by the same gong as Helen – for his acting and charity work with troops.

He met the Queen in July last year when she visited the Weatherfield set to celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary. Dedicating his award to our war heroes, Antony said: “I am absolutely overwhelmed by this honour, especially as it was bestowed during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“I share this award with every single person who has ever fought for our country – I am incredibly honored and honored to be in your company. Thank you for your service.”

Meanwhile, MasterChef judges Gregg and John shared their shock and pride at receiving MBEs. South London-born Gregg, 57, said it felt like he was living in a “fairy tale”.

“Glistening Reign”

The former greengrocer said: “Wow – fruit and veg have been a very good friend of mine for years. What an incredible honor it is to be recognized by Her Majesty at such a fabulous moment in her illustrious reign.

“From a welfare state in Peckham to Queen’s recognition is something of a fairy tale to me. I’m incredibly, incredibly proud.”

Australian-born John, 56, added he was “humbled and very grateful” for his honor. The pair have hosted MasterChef since its revival in 2005, and its massive success has sparked popular spin-offs, as well as celebrity and junior releases, around the world.

John said: “I’m really thrilled, humbled and very grateful and I want to thank those who nominated me for this great honor of an MBE. It is a very proud moment for me and my family to be proposed and recognized for services to the food industry and broadcasting where I have worked for over 40 years.

Another to get a gong is Total Eclipse of the Heart singer Bonnie Tyler, 70. The Welsh singing legend, who has been belting out tunes for five decades, said her MBE shows that “anyone, from any background, can be a hit”. after successfully smashing out tunes for five decades.

As we revealed in The Sun on Sunday, Homeland star Damian Lewis, 51, is receiving a CBE. The actor, whose wife Helen McCrory died of cancer last year, works for a number of charities and organizations.

Fashion designer Stella McCartney, 50, and philanthropist Elisabeth Murdoch, 53, also both received CBEs. Sports presenter Clare Balding, 51, said it was “overwhelming to be recognized for doing things I enjoy so much” as she was also named a CBE.

Meanwhile, Birds of a Feather star Pauline Quirke, 62, is named an MBE. Other winners include Heidi Thomas, 59, creator of Call The Midwife, who said her OBE will go “straight to the mantelpiece” at Nonnatus House, the fictional monastery featured in the hit TV show she created.

Gregg Wallace

Grime rapper and director Andrew Onwubolu, 32, also gets an OBE – and tells how it made his parents proud. His film Blue Story – about a London gang war – was pulled from theaters in 2019 after violence erupted at several screenings.

He said: “It really makes me feel like everything I’ve done has reached a goal and it’s going up and up and for me it’s just the beginning – it’s just the beginning. But it gives you that boost, and on top of that, what it did personally is that when I told my parents, they got very excited. It was really good because it made her happy too, so that was nice.”

The Platinum Jubilee Honors recognize famous names from the worlds of art, sport, politics and unsung heroes in local communities.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “This historic platinum anniversary is a celebration not only of the monarch but of the qualities she possesses.

“The honors she is giving this week reflect many of those qualities that have been invaluable to communities from all walks of life and to communities across the UK. I pay tribute to all of this year’s winners. Her stories of courage and compassion are an inspiration to all of us.”

A record proportion of Queen’s Birthday Honors goes to women, with the percentage this year at 51.5 per cent, up slightly from the previous record of 51.2 per cent set in 2015.

In a nod to Prince Charles, the Queen presented a top honor to a key member of her son’s team. Clive Alderton, private secretary to the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, has been appointed Knight Commander of the RVO.

Sir Clive first joined her household in 2006. He was briefly appointed British Ambassador to Morocco in 2012 and served for three years before returning as the Prince’s main adviser.
