Conor McGregor set to return to UFC ‘early 2023’ as recovery from a horrific broken leg is taking longer than expected

CONOR MCGREGOR will not return to the Octagon until “early 2023.”

McGregor, 33, appeared to be on course for an autumn return after seemingly recovering faster than expected from the horrific broken leg he sustained last July.

But according to mixed martial arts reporter Ariel Helwani, The Notorious is more likely to return to the cage in “February or March.”

During a recent episode of The MMA Hour, he said: “By the way, the last I heard was that Conor might be back in February, March or something like that.

“It doesn’t look like he’s coming back in 2022. So here you have a guy who hasn’t fought since (July) last year.

“He is [Nate Diaz] I’ll be waiting a year and a half for a guy who obviously knows he’s going to make money fighting him, but does he really want to sit around in the prime of his life, when he’s as popular as can be, for that fight?

“What if Conor comes back and trips and hurts himself again? There are a million different things that could happen.

“There’s no guarantee he’ll be back tomorrow, next month, the month after and last I heard was early 2023.

“There is no rush here as there should be no rush because he is coming back from such a cruel and serious injury.”

McGregor announced last month that he has yet to receive medical clearance to kick his left leg again.

The UFC figurehead said: “The body is fine. I’m out here with my entire team.

“Of course I’m enjoying the Monaco Grand Prix, after that we’ll gradually increase the training.

“I should be able to kick now, I have another CT scan in the coming days and then I can kick.

“Once I can kick and grab, I’ll be back in no time.

“Boxing is going well, strength training and that’s all. I’m looking forward to coming back.”

McGregor is currently riding a tackle after back-to-back losses to Dustin Poirier last year.

The Irishman has been called up by a number of fighters in recent months, including new fan favorite Michael Chandler.

UFC supremo Dana White is a fan of the easy match-up, telling TMZ, “I really like Chandler vs. Conor after Chandler’s last fight.

“There are many battles to be fought. I don’t know if that’s the right one.

“We’ll see what the landscape looks like when Conor comes back.”
