Conor McGregor praises Ian Machado Garry after inspiring him to play MMA… and supporting the UFC star in becoming a world champion

CONOR McGREGOR backed Ian Machado Garry by helping him become UFC champion – inspiring his career.

Garry has spoken openly about MMA after watching the sensational rise of superstar McGregor.

The welterweight is now ranked 13th in the UFC and this month scored a highlight knockout against 36-year-old Daniel Rodriguez.

McGregor, 34, gushed about Garry, 25, helping the young Irishman make it to the top of the UFC.

He said: “I really enjoyed it, it was phenomenal. There is no doubt about it. He’s that kid’s guy.”

“I would love to see him do it and I believe he can do it and I believe he will do it. I am behind him completely.”

McGregor flew back from America to support Katie Taylor ahead of her homecoming fight.

Taylor, 36, moves up to super lightweight to challenge undisputed champion Chantelle Cameron, 32, in Ireland’s first boxing event since 2014.

And McGregor praised Ireland’s most popular sports star for inspiring young girls at grassroots boxing level.

He said: “There are so many girls in Ireland at the moment.”

“At the Crumlin Boxing Club – my club – we recently had our most successful senior championship, we had our most medals.

“We sent 15 competitors and 11 of them were girls, they were all girls, we had about 13 medalists, gold medalists, it was our most successful senior championships and it was all thanks to the success and rise of Katie Taylor that motivated those girls.

“It happened to my sport, like you saw with Ian Garry, it bore fruit. The fighting game is beautiful, greatness inspires greatness and so on.”
