Congleton Christmas Market: Horror as ‘car crashes into screaming crowd at 50mph’

A car drove into a crowd at a Christmas market, it has been reported.

Families with young children and the elderly were among those seen as the vehicle plowed through.

It is said to have been going at least 50mph as it drove through the crowd of 800 at the Congleton Christmas Market in Cheshire today.

Business owner Steve Brown said: “It was absolutely appalling.

“A car has sped down the High Street – which is packed with stalls and people. Here are hundreds of people, people with children and dogs and many traders.

“He must have been driving at least 50 miles an hour. People jumped out of the way.

“I saw an elderly lady who had to jump out of the way – she is very upset. We all are.”

Steve says people ran after the driver in the car, who he says didn’t stop. He said: “We don’t really know what’s happening yet, but the police are here now.”

Cheshire Police have been contacted for comment.
