COLLIER . COUNTY
A project is underway in Collier County to make the area safer for boaters and nicer beaches for visitors. It is the Wiggins Pass dredging project, which takes place on a 4-year cycle.
The crew set sail Wednesday, preparing for the dredging project. The project helps protect Collier County’s beaches, which attract returning visitors.
Beaches are one of Collier County’s most essential selling points.
“The beaches are everything Florida is,” says Marcia Berk, from Ohio. We go down because of the beach. ”
Berk and her family spend winters in Collier County to escape the cold and snow of the north each year.
Berk’s daughter, Stacey Smith, said dredging was needed and was delighted the county invested in the project.
“I think because of erosion and climate change and different weather patterns, there’s been a lot of beaches that have disappeared, and sadly for the world and the planet,” Smith said.
In the next few days, pipes will be lined up along the beach. The pipes will take the sand from the inlet channel and pump it back where it belongs.
It is a cycle that reinvents beaches, maintains inlets and makes navigating easier for boaters, says Andy Miller, county coastal manager.
“Pretty much like the hand of a clock as we were on a four-year major dredging cycle, the pass was still at the point where boaters had a bit of a problem getting in and out even at high tide,” says Miller. up,” Miller said.
Miller explains that they always keep an eye on the Wiggins Pass’s condition. They conduct annual surveillance surveys and dredge as needed, regardless of the cost.
$2 million for the dredging project came from tourism development taxes and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Work will be transferred to the Physicians once dredging is completed at Wiggins Pass.
The crews hope to complete the dredging of Wiggins Pass in about 40 days.
