‘Cobra Kai’ season 4 finale: EP talks new champion, Miguel’s decision

Warning: The following contains spoilers for the final part of Season 4 of Cobra Kai.

The All Valley Karate Tournament has crowned its new champions.

In the season 4 finale of Cobra Kai, the two winners emerged from the chaos of hostile dojos, as Hawk brought the trophy home to the boys, and Tory fought his way to become the tournament’s first female champion. . But Tory’s win also gave Cobra Kai a big W, as the “worst dojo in the valley” beat the underdogs Eagle Fang and Miyagi-Do overall.

But those aren’t the only moving parts in the closer action season. Not only did Terry Silver announce his plans to expand his nefarious dojo across the valley, but Miguel made a life-changing decision to quit the tournament and track down his father in Mexico, while Johnny and Daniel ended up agrees to bury the vault (in fact, time!) and helps the kids find their own way through karate and life.

Below, executive producers and co-hosts Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz talk to TVLine about all things Season 4, including the grand finale’s turn, the sudden trip of the season. Miguel goes abroad and a possible future for Tory and Robby.

TVLINE | Miguel left the tournament just before his final game. Why did he make that decision and what was going on in his head?
We’ve seen Miguel rise to the highest heights, and even seen him win the All Valley Tournament. We wanted to position the Miguel/Johnny storyline in Season 4 in a more personal way, in terms of how Miguel approached this tournament, how he reconciled his humanity and how he worked out his relationship. with Johnny, when that was growing. Johnny is a teacher and a father, and we want to really lean on that. Aside from the father-daughter dynamics of Sam and Daniel, these are really the only other characters where we can pull off this kind of plot.

It’s important to us that rival karate a lot to make sure we’re also going through some real teenage relationships. Miguel is increasingly conflicted about who his mentors are, who his role models are, and who is most devoted to him. Is he caught up in something that isn’t his own competition or is it not a fight where he has personal space in every given moment? We wanted to put Miguel and Johnny in a position where they weren’t on the same page at the right time. Both have internal drives about where they want to be at this point in their lives and what is really making them feel uncomfortable. In a way, Miguel’s decision was a snap, and in a way, it’s something that has brooded all season. By the time they realized they were on different pages, it was too late.

The final part of Cobra Kai season 4TVLINE | During the finale, Johnny and Daniel realize the error of their ways, but before the tournament, Johnny is very jealous of Daniel and Miguel’s relationship. Why does that cause him insecurity?
Ever since the All Valley tournament in high school, where Daniel won over Johnny, he’s been feeling a little underwhelming. He felt he was second best or less, and then 30 years of his life continued to prove it when he found himself struggling with odd jobs, a dysfunctional relationship with a son and no love in his life. Meanwhile, looking at billboards and hearing commercials with his old high school rival who’s been wildly successful, he can’t help but feel jealous or less than Daniel in some respects. Even though the two of them buried the vault, in a sense, and they were working together, it was only natural. As Daniel begins to connect with Miguel – who is one of the most important relationships in Johnny’s life and the son of a generation – Johnny begins to feel like his arch-rival is likely to be. a new and better role model that Miguel is aiming for. instead of him.

TVLINE | Most kids want to expand their training and learn from both Johnny and Daniel. Why is that confusing for the senseis?
HURWITZ | Johnny and Daniel were raised with these ideas in their youth ingrained in them. But as we all get older, you can dig deeper and toughen up on your beliefs about the world, or you can open your mind and continue your education, and take what you feel is right. values in all kinds of philosophies and apply them to private life. It’s something all of our characters struggle with, and this season we see our young characters have that open mind. It’s not uncommon in life when you’re a teenager and you’re more open to the ideas of the world than someone is getting their way. If you look back at Mr. Miyagi’s messages to Daniel (which we recall), Daniel, as a kid, said, “I’ll do it your way,” and Mr. Miyagi said, “No, you found a way. private.” So Mr. Miyagi was evolved enough to realize that it’s everyone’s task in life to find out who they are and what they believe in. Johnny and Daniel are grappling with their own set of beliefs this season, but their kids may be a little ahead of them throughout this year.

Cobra Kai Part 4TVLINE | Robby and Tory were both left at a very interesting crossroads at the end of the finale. What can we expect from their stories in Season 5?
HURWITZ | Season 4 was a very important season for both Robby and Tory in different ways, but we also see them coming together in a relationship. Robby is ready to open his arms to Johnny after all these years, it’s something I think a lot of fans have wanted to see, and something we’ve all been looking forward to for a while. long time. So we’ll see how Robby and Johnny’s relationship continues. Will they go back to their old ways or continue to progress with them, especially given Johnny’s close relationship with Miguel and his relationship with Carmen and all that? We’re discovering more about Robby and his loyalty, and Season 5 is another big season for him.

For Tory, she is a champion. That’s what she wanted, and she didn’t have all the advantages like many of the other teenagers on our program. She has a sick mother and comes from very little, so to be a champion is something that would mean a lot, just her and hers. But to find out at the end of the season that the legitimacy of that championship is in doubt in her mind, gives us an interesting place for her to continue. How would she respond to that? She feels like she has something special and pure, and she can go in any direction from that kind of bombshell.

Cobra Kai Part 4 ChozenTVLINE | Anthony found the scroll that Chozen gave Daniel last season. Is there anything you can tease about that, and will it work?
HEALD | There’s always the possibility that you’ll learn more about that scroll or more about the history of Miyagi-Do, but there’s nothing we can tease at the moment. We would say it was tied directly to Daniel seeing the original scroll for crane engineering, which gave rise to the idea that these scrolls actually existed. The second scroll that Chozen gave Daniel while he was in Okinawa, I think some of the assumptions were, “Oh, maybe he was giving him that crane engineering scroll,” but no, there was a scroll. This new paper, a new technique. It is there to introduce to the world that there are other scrolls. There is a history there.

TVLINE | You recently ended production on the next season. Is there anything else you can tease for Season 5?
HEALD | We clearly know that Chozen is coming back, and Daniel, who we find in the ultimate depths of his loss, is feeling defeated and feels like he’s made a deal with the devil. . He realized that it was not okay to allow Miyagi-Do to be extinguished in this way. There are times when the battle has to change, and what better moment for Chozen to return to this story and dive into the Miyagi-Therefore. Chozen is someone who is attached to a more aggressive past, where fighting is not a contest, but about life and death. He still feels he owes Daniel some help, and he wants to make amends even though Daniel has forgiven him. From that alone, I feel like audiences can infer the power with which Season 5 will begin. There are quite a few storylines that start spinning very quickly and are very intense as we head into next season.
