CLEVELAND (AP) – Cleveland Browns defensive rival Malik McDowell, who was given a second chance by the group after serving a prison sentence, was arrested Monday in Florida on charges of beating a police officer and exposing himself before the public.

Police in Deerfield Beach, Florida, said they were responding to a “naked male walking near a school” when an officer approached McDowell, who was sitting on the curb, according to the arrest report. The officer said McDowell stood up, uttered an obscenity at him and “rushed at me at full speed with one fist.”

The official said he was unable to avoid McDowell’s attack or use any “de-escalation tactics.” McDowell lunged at the officer and punched him in the right eye and the top of his head, according to reports.

McDowell fled before he was stopped with a stun gun and handcuffed. The officer said his right eye was almost closed from swelling from the punches he received during the attack and there was a “possibility of a permanent eye injury.”

McDowell was charged with aggravated assault with an officer, resisting an officer/obstructing by force, and exposing genitals in public. The bail is posted at $25,000. It is unclear if he has an attorney who can speak for him.

The Browns released a statement about McDowell, who has only one season left under contract with the team, saying they are seeking more information.

The group said: “We are aware of the incident and arrest that is highly relevant to Malik McDowell and are in the process of gathering more information. “We understand the seriousness of this issue and our thoughts are for the well-being of all involved. We will have no further comment at this time.”

McDowell comes to the Browns with a troubled past.
