The 41-year-old Belgian was immediately caught up by the race stewards and handed a two-month ban.

A jockey who did the same in Ecuador earlier in the week was banned for life.

He apologized after the incident but was still allowed to race in the Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, much to the displeasure of many race fans.

In the end he finished second in the big race on Vadeni, owned by his big money holder, the Aga Khan.

The retainer is thought to be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds each year, and Soumillon also gets a piece of breeding rights for every Aga Khan horse that goes on to become a stallion.

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Soumillon after the Aga Khan’s daughter, Princess Zahra, expressed her displeasure at the incident.

She said on Saturday: “We’ve been talking about what we can do and under the race rules it was too close to this weekend so we’re focusing on the race and we’ll be speaking to Christophe on Monday.

“Obviously it was an irresponsible, unthinkable thing to happen and do.

“As a team we will have a real conversation with Christophe.

“We’re still digesting it and haven’t had a chance to all sit together yet.

“It was very difficult to watch and it’s very fortunate that nobody got hurt.”

And after a meeting on Monday afternoon, the Aga Khan decided to cut ties with Soumillon for good.

The pair have celebrated dozens of major race wins together over the years, from Dalakhani and Zarkava in the Arc in the early 2000s to Vadeni at this year’s Coral-Eclipse.

He held two stints as the Aga Khan’s jockey between 2002 and 2009 before beginning a second term in 2014.

A statement from Aga Khan Studs read: “Following last Friday’s incident at Saint-Cloud which resulted in the downfall of Rossa Ryan, the Aga Khan Studs have taken the decision to end their endorsement with jockey Christophe Soumillon with immediate effect .

“As of this week, Soumillon may still occasionally ride in Aga Khan silks at the discretion of the French trainers and the Aga Khan Studs team.

“At this stage there is no intention of keeping a jockey in France for the foreseeable future.”
