The the last episode of season five revealed a big shock: it was Kate (Chrissy Metz) is about to marry her tough boss, Phillip (Chris Geere). To see how we get there, the January 4 season 6 premiere put everything back with Kate and Toby still unmarried (Chris Sullivan), people who are clearly having a hard time in heaven.
Namely, while Toby sent lots of presents for Kate’s 41st birthday, he wasn’t there for most of the day. Yes, the surprise visit at the end was nice, but Kate was a single mom while Toby was on vacation in San Francisco. That must cause a disconnection.
It didn’t seem to help that Phillip had arranged the sweetest birthday present for Kate: their students sang her favorite song, “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper.
If you’re still struggling with the end of Ka-Toby, you’re not alone.
In an exclusive chat with E! NewsMetz revealed that she cried after hearing the news of Kate and Toby’s divorce, noting that, “Chris was always joking. He was like, ‘It wouldn’t be Beth and Randall.’ And I was like, ‘I know, but does it have to be us?’
However, as Metz has expressed, not all couples want to be together forever. She said of Kate and Toby’s relationship in season six: “People grow and evolve and change, and if you don’t grow together you’ll grow apart.”
While Metz may not have liked this ending for her character, she admits it’s a realistic ending, adding, “What I think is so beautiful about any relationship is that it changes So all the wonderful things Kate learned from Toby and, like, a love she never experienced for Toby, clearly contributed to the woman she is. And she’s going to put that into the next relationship, which is Phillip.”
Of course, the hardest part of all this for Metz is having an on-screen romance with someone who isn’t her “forever forever” guy. “I just adore him,” Metz said of Sullivan. “And I’m so grateful to him. So it feels like I’m cheating on him, it’s true. Like he’s my friend, but it doesn’t seem like this is true.”
Still, Metz said she’s excited for viewers to see how the whole thing plays out.
