Will, 53, shocked viewers and viewers at the Oscars when he slapped Chris for making a joke about his wife Jada’s shaved head.
The standup comic referenced Jada’s shaved head, saying, “Jada I love you GI Jane 2 can’t wait to see it.”
Matrix actress Jada, who first revealed in 2018 that she suffered from hair loss, rolled her eyes at the joke and looked upset – which apparently prompted Will to act.
Stars including Nicole Kidman and Lupita Nyong’o looked horrified as he stormed the stage and slapped the presenter hard in the face.
The Fresh Prince star then headed back to his seat as a stunned Chris said: “Will Smith just threw the shit out of me.”
Will yelled at the comedian, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”
Looking visibly shaken, Chris said, “Wow dude, it was a joke by GI Jane,” to which Will repeated, “Keep my wife’s name out of your friggin’ mouth!”
Chris said, “I will, okay?” before adding, “That was the … greatest night in television history.”
It is believed that Chris has not spoken to Will since the incident.
The duo are yet to make amends after the incident as Chris reportedly went straight to his dressing room after leaving the stage.
According to TMZ, the comedian was unaware that Jada has alopecia when he made the joke.
Will eventually apologized to Chris nearly a full day after the incident, calling his actions “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
He wrote on Instagram: “Violence in all its forms is toxic and destructive. My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable.
“Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s health was too much for me and I reacted emotionally.
“I want to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong.”
He continued: “I’m embarrassed and my actions were no indication of the man I want to be. In a world of love and kindness there is no room for violence.
“I also want to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all contestants and all viewers around the world.”
He added: “I would like to apologize to the Williams family and my King Richard family. I deeply regret that my behavior has marred what was otherwise a great journey for all of us.”
Will finished his message: “I’m a work in progress.”
Chris got emotional and said he’s “still processing” being hit on his first comedy show since the incident.
Receiving a hearty response from the crowd, he said, “Let me be all foggy and shitty,” so CNN’s Chloe Melas.
Chris then sarcastically asked the audience, “How was your weekend?” to which the crowd responded with laughter.
He continued, “I don’t have much to say about that, so if that’s what you came here for,” he said as he eased off.
“I had a whole show written before this weekend. I’m still processing what happened, so I’m going to talk about this shit at some point. It is getting serious. It’s going to be fun, but for now I’m going to crack a few jokes.”
In a statement released to the Hollywood Reporter on March 30, Oscars officials announced that “disciplinary proceedings” have begun regarding the onstage incident involving Will.
The academy wrote in its scathing message: “Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in this moment.
“We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what happened during a celebratory event.”
They then added that Will apparently refused to leave the show.
“Things developed in a way that we could not have foreseen. While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and declined, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently.”
