An Oscars producer claims cops are “on the spot and ready to arrest Will Smith” after he punched Chris Rock at the awards show.
The incident went down after the Grown Ups star made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s shaved head.
Oscar producer Will Packer addressed the recent slapping incident on Good Morning America.
In a preview of the interview, he told TJ Holmes that the Los Angeles Police Department was at the awards ceremony on Sunday.
He claimed they were ready to arrest the I, Robot actor after he met the presenter.
During the interview, he said: “They said, you know, that’s battery, was a word they were using at that moment.
“They said, ‘We’re going to get him. We are prepared. We’re ready to grab him right now.
Packer continued, “They laid out the options. And as they spoke, Chris — he was very dismissive of those options.
“He said, ‘No, no, no, I’m fine.’
“And even to the point where I said, ‘Rock, let her finish.’ LAPD officials finished outlining his options and said, “Would you like us to do something?” And he said no. He said no.”
In the same clip, Packer said he had no direct contact with Smith on the night of the Oscars.
The LAPD released a statement after the incident showing that Chris declined to press charges.
“LAPD investigative authorities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program,” the statement began.
“In the incident, one person hit another. The data subject has declined to file a police report.”
The statement continued, “If the individual concerned desires a police report at a later date, the LAPD is available to complete an investigative report.”
Earlier this week, the academy announced that the slap was considered a violation of its code of conduct.
Smith, who was nominated for his role in King Richard, was asked to leave the awards ceremony after being slapped.
However, he declined.
In a statement released to the Hollywood Reporter on March 30, Oscars officials confirmed that “disciplinary proceedings” had begun over the incident.
The message from the academy read: “Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in this moment.
“We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what happened during a celebratory event.”
The statement continued: “Things developed in a way that we could not have foreseen. While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently.”
TMZ reported that two Oscar officials — Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson — were the ones who asked the actor to leave.
Another part of the statement revealed: “The Board of Governors today began disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s standards of conduct, including improper physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior and endangering the integrity of the Academy.
“Mr. Smith will be given at least 15 days’ notice of his violations and sanctions and an opportunity to be heard beforehand through a written response.”
In a memo, the academy said that at the “next board meeting on April 18” they plan to take “all” disciplinary action, including “suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.”
ROCK WITH HIM
Chris returned to work days after hosting the productive awards show.
The actor kicked off a show in Boston this week by saying, “How was your weekend?” with a chuckle.
The audience started cheering and hooting as he continued.
“I don’t have a whole bunch of shit about what happened, so if you came to hear that … I had a whole show that I wrote before this weekend and I’m still kind of processing what happened “, he said.
Chris promised, “Well, eventually I’ll talk about it and it’ll be serious and fun.”
The audience raised their voices again as some began chanting, “F**k Will Smith.”
The comedian didn’t join in the frenzy but went on with his show.
During Sunday’s Academy Awards, Smith stormed onto the stage and punched Chris – who was acting as presenter – after the comic made a joke about Jada’s buzzed hairdo, saying: “Jada I love you GI Jane 2 can’t wait.” to see it.”
The actress, who previously revealed she suffered from alopecia years ago – a condition that causes hair loss – rolled her eyes.
After punching the show’s host, Smith walked back to his seat and Chris yelled, “Will Smith just kicked the shit out of me.”
Will yelled from his seat, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”
Chris looked shaken and said, “Wow dude that was a GI Jane joke.”
