China is stepping up its rivalry with the US, announcing a massive plan to carry out more than 40 space launches by 2022.
The space race looks set to heat up, with NASA scheduling roughly the same number this year.
China is undertaking the ambitious goal of completing the construction of an ISS competitor.
CASC – China’s equivalent of NASA – said it will carry out six important missions to complete the Tiangong space station.
That includes two crewed Shenzhou spacecraft, two cargo lifters and two laboratory modules.
The country has traditionally taken a cautious approach to its space program, but its busy list shows that China now wants to take a leading role in the aforementioned skies.
China’s military-run space program is banned from accessing the ISS due to objections from the US.
So instead the country went it alone.
It was built before and then abandoned two test stations before continuing with the latest model.
The country is also believed to be working on a top secret space plan.
Their current six-month mission is the longest since China first sent a man into space in 2003, becoming the third to do so after Russia and the US.
The crew has performed spacewalks, with China’s first female astronaut to participate.
The US plans to do about the same number of launches as China by 2022, after some disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
Like everyone, NASA had problems getting hold of vital computer chips, as well as the liquid oxygen used to launch rockets, which needed to be sent to the hospital for patients.
