The murder took place after they bought fast food after an evening church service, AL.com reported.

Reese then went shopping at a grocery store. When she returned, she flipped her coffee table to stage a robbery.

It didn’t take long for investigators to discover that she had lied to them about the circumstances of her husband’s death.

Less than a month later, Reese and her pastor friend Jeffery David Brown were charged with murder.

Investigators learned they were having an affair and plotted to kill Michael so they could be together.

Reese’s relationship with Brown began in 2013, just four years after she married Michael.

He worked at Sardis Baptist Church in Boaz, Alabama, where Reese was Secretary of Music.

As investigators increased the pressure, Reese and Brown quickly turned on each other.

Prosecutors eventually used Brown’s testimony to support their case against Reese.

Brown pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years.

Reese’s case went to trial, where a jury convicted her and a judge sentenced her to 40 years in 2017.

But in 2019, law enforcement and Michael’s family members were dismayed to discover Reese had been placed in a low-security work release program just miles from her crime, AL.com reported.

She had served less than three years of her sentence.

Many in the community were upset that Michael’s family and local police were not notified that Reese had returned to the area.

The Alabama Department of Justice eventually transferred Reese back to the Julia Tutwiler Women’s Prison, a maximum security facility that holds Alabama’s death row inmates.

While a department spokesman told AL.com that the move to the work release program was temporary, they added that the public outcry also influenced their decision.
