Horrifying images and videos emerged yesterday of the bow and arrow carnage unleashed by a crazed killer at a supermarket.
Footage was released at the beginning of the trial of 38-year-old Espen Bråthen showing him running amok with a gun at a Co-op Extra store in Kongsberg, Norway last October.
The maniac in the white vest bursts into the store, wielding his bow and firing a rapid-fire volley of arrows at innocent shoppers.
A rampage by the unstable loner Brathen – in which he also used hunting knives – killed five victims and wounded two, including a police officer who was shot in the back with an arrow.
Asked about his plea by a judge yesterday, Brathen replied: “I plead guilty.”
The court heard he stalked the city streets with 80 arrows and several knives – but all five of his victims died of stab wounds.
He is also accused of attempting to murder 11 people with a bow and arrow.
Twisted Brathen told the court he thought he was going blind and then decided to go out and kill while he could still see.
The madman said he believed he would be reborn and enjoy a better life if he killed.
He said: “I had the idea that I had to kill in order to be reborn in a good place. I figured now I can go out and kill before I go blind.
“There is no risk of recurrence because now I know I will not go blind and that killing is wrong.
“I will never kill again. I regret what I did and wish those I killed were alive. That was not intentional and I deeply regret it.”
Brathen’s lawyer Fredrik Neumann said his client was a very ill person.
The prosecutor and defense attorney agreed that Bråthen – who claims to be a Muslim – is mentally ill and should be sentenced to compulsory psychiatric treatment.
However, a judge decides on their application.
Bråthen unleashed a 35-minute rampage in a town in Norway when police officers frantically chased him after reports he was spraying darts at shoppers indiscriminately.
He has been described as an “unstable” loner who once threatened to kill his father.
The horrifying attack happened after around 6:30 p.m. local time in the small town of Kongsberg, home to around 25,000 people, 80 km west of Oslo.
In addition to the five dead, all of whom were between 50 and 70 years old, two people were also injured.
Bråthen, a Danish citizen living in the Kongsberg area who is said to have psychiatric problems.
According to court documents and neighbors, Bråthen was an “unstable” loner who owned a collection of guns and rarely left his apartment as he suffered from mental health issues and had become estranged from his family.
He was born in Norway and has always lived there, but has Danish citizenship and has been in trouble with the police on several occasions, most recently in May 2020.
On May 29, he entered his parents’ home and ordered them all to leave, threatening to kill his father.
After he left, his shocked relatives found a Colt revolver pistol on the sofa.
A court then issued an injunction preventing him from seeing his mother and father, which he broke months later.
Neighbors of the alleged killer told Aftenposten, Norway’s largest newspaper, that they saw him training with guns in his garden.
Described as a martial artist in a “brutal fighting style” using “a cudgel or truncheon,” he caught the attention of police, who were reportedly once pictured wearing helmets in his garden.
Other ex-neighbours, Silje Limstrand, 22, and Gudoon Hersi, 21, told the newspaper they were afraid of Bråthen, who would make racist remarks and act in threatening and bizarre ways – often pacing.
Bråthen, a Muslim convert, was on a terror watch list and also made a chilling Facebook video.
In the clip, the shaven suspect reads a note in English that reads: “Hello. I am a messenger and I come with a warning.
“Is that really what you want? It is time.
Attacks on anyone in public places are a recurring trait among extremist Islamists perpetrating terrorism in the West.
