CHILDREN living with cancer were delighted to receive Christmas gifts from Santa himself – thank you, our benevolent readers.

It follows an outcry against The Sun during Sunday’s Xmas Cards For Kids campaign in conjunction with the Young Lives vs Cancer charity.

We launched a contest asking kids around the country to create festive pictures and the winners were turned into limited edition cards, thanks to print.com.

Card sales are used to buy gifts for children staying in the charity’s special Charity Homes, where young cancer patients and their families can stay during treatment tired. And this week Santa delivered those presents.

Florentina Burton, 4, diagnosed with neuroblastoma in May of this year, beamed as she received a kinetic sand set.

Her parents, Amelia and Kevin, watched intently as she opened the gift at St Paul’s House, Home from Home in London, where the whole family had been staying while Florentina received treatment.

Amelia, 33, said: “Florentina loves Father’s Christmas. We didn’t think she would see him this year but getting a visit and a gift from him has been amazing.”

Sumayyah Hassan was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 19 months and spent six months at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

After chemotherapy, the four-year-old relapsed but has now received a stem cell donation from his mother, Amira, 32. When your child is diagnosed with cancer, Christmases become incredibly precious.”

Santa also visited 23-month-old Matthew Innes, who suffered from neuroblastoma in March. But his illness hasn’t stopped him from kicking a new ball with Santa.

Matthew’s parents Carolyn and Callum are staying at Marion’s House in Glasgow during his treatment.

Carolyn said: “Meeting Santa Claus was amazing. Matthew loves him. Despite everything, he’s still an ordinary boy who loves football, cars, dinosaurs – and Santa Claus.”

Sarah, Duchess of York, said: “I have been working to help young people with cancer for the past 30 years. The Sun on Sunday Xmas Cards For Kids campaign is a great idea.

“The thought of having so many children creating cards to help people battling cancer is amazing.”

And Young Lives vs Cancer CEO Rachel Kirby-Rider said: “We are grateful to The Sun readers on Sunday for their support of the Xmas Cards For Kids campaign. Thanks everyone.”
