Sterling is entering the final 12 months of his contract and is open to all options – but wants to feature regularly in the Countdown to the Winter World Cup.

The winger doesn’t want to be on the bench and is keen to still be fighting for trophies when he leaves Champions City.

Despite making 32 starts in all competitions last season, he was left out in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid and in the crucial last game of the season against Aston Villa.

The imminent arrival of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez will make the competition for the top spots even tougher.

The Blues’ new American owners believe a move for Sterling would be a statement after months of turmoil.

Although he is about to start the final year of his contract, Sterling would still ask for a fee of around £60million.

He has put all thoughts of his plans at club level on hold while he was in the Nations League with England.

But the demand for a regular place in the first team is the biggest driver of all negotiations.
