Chelsea sale depends on Roman’s Portuguese passport
Chelsea have been plunged into an 11-hour sales slump – over Roman Abramovich’s Portuguese passport, writes MARTIN LIPTON.
SunSport understand the Government is finally ready to sign the proposed £4.25billion deal to the consortium led by Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly.
But Whitehall bosses point to objections from the European Union that could derail the entire deal.
And while it is still expected that an agreement can be reached, there is a real risk that Chelsea will not get EU approval.
SunSport has been told the government believes Abramovich has now made sufficient commitments for the Treasury Department and DCMS to sign off on the acquisition.
The Russian billionaire has issued legally binding guarantees for the £1.6billion loan that has helped fund the club for the past 19 years and promises none of it will go to him or his family.
This was seen as the final obstacle to a sale, paving the way for Boehly to take the helm.
But now government sources claim senior EU officials have yet to accept the terms of the deal.
Abramovoich was also sanctioned by the EU for his alleged support for Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
