Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku lay on the floor in agony after being beaten by Simon Mignolet in Belgium training session

ROMELU LUKAKU is reportedly a doubt for Belgium’s Nations League clash with the Netherlands after being beaten by Simon Mignolet in training on Wednesday.

The Chelsea forward, 29, was left on the ground in pain after challenging the ex-Liverpool keeper for the ball during an airborne session.

Physios rushed onto the pitch to treat the Blues star, who was lying on the ground in agony.

The Belgium giants’ forward reportedly injured his ankle in the incident.

He had to sit out training today as Belgium coach Roberto Martinez was sweating due to his fitness for the game.

So far, the Belgian FA has not published any comment – and Lukaku has not left the camp.

It caps a miserable time for Lukaku, who is expected to leave Stamford Bridge.

The Belgian joined for £97.5million last summer but hasn’t reached the same heights as when he led Inter to Serie A glory in the 2020-21 season.

After a strong start, Lukaku ended the league season with just eight goals and thus could not be the answer to Thomas Tuchel’s ongoing striker problems.

And now it looks like the partnership could be on the verge of an end, with rumor that the 29-year-old could be willing to take a pay cut to return to Inter.

The Italian club believe the striker will accept a salary similar to that of his first spell at the club.

This would result in Lukaku’s weekly wage dropping to around £125,000 a week, a drop of almost £3million compared to his west London earnings.

A return to the Italian capital has been rumored since the beginning of the year.

In a bombastic mid-season interview, Lukaku said: “I know I’ll come back to Inter, I really hope so.”

This caused many blues fans to turn their backs on their record signing, with the relationship seemingly fractured as ever.

The departure of Lukaku could be the catalyst for the new era at Stamford Bridge as the club enter their first season under new ownership in two decades.
