Chelsea ratings: Reece James as intelligent and organized as ever but Mudryk is struggling to find his footing in England

CHELSEA flopped to another terrible result as their problems continued under Graham Potter against Aston Villa.

The Blues drew 2-2 at struggling Everton in their last game at Stamford Bridge before the international break.

And they did even worse tonight, losing 2-0 to Unai Emerys midfielder Villa.

In another difficult afternoon for the Blues, SunSport’s John Dillon rates each performer of the day.

KEPA ARRIZABALAGA – 5

The keeper was stuck and could do little as Ollie Watkins cleared early to hit the target. And he never stood a chance to come close to John McGinn’s screaming second-half strike for Villa.

REECE JAMES-6

As intelligent and organized as ever on the right side of the back three. Worked hard to get the ball to Ruben Loftus-Cheek but to no avail.

KALIDOU KOULIBALY – 7

Was caught flat footed by teammate Marc Cucurella as Villa took the lead. And his presence just couldn’t keep Chelsea afloat.

MARC CUCURELLA-5

Was involved in violent tussles with Villa’s aggressive John McGinn from the start. Then Kalidou Koulibaly got in the way and headed back to Ollie Watkins to score for Villa in the 18th minute.

RUBEN LOFTUS CHEEK – 6

Searched for paths on the right and got into several crosses. But they just weren’t harmful enough. Substituted in the second half.

ENZO FERNANDEZ – 5

Looked busy in central midfield without ever really asserting himself in the game as might have been expected given his gargantuan price tag.

MATEO KOVACIC – 6

Usual snappy and driving presence in central midfield. Showed his pragmatic side when booked for stopping breakaway Ashley Young just before half-time.

Ben Chilwell – 6th

Eagerly looked for opportunities in left midfield. He clamored for a penalty when cleared in the penalty area but appeared to be brought down by Ezri Konsa in the first half.

KAI HAVERTZ – 5

He often seems unfocused in attack and misses a good chance in the 14th minute. Was closer with a clever cut just before the break.

MYCHAILO MUDRYK – 5

It still looks like he’s struggling to find his footing in English football. A bad and weak missed chance from 15 meters when Mateo Kovacic made it clear in the 31st minute. Finally ticked off.

JOAO FELIX – 6

His busyness summed up Chelsea’s frantic but undisciplined attacks. Had several half-chances throughout the game – but isn’t clinical enough

SUBSTITUTE

N’Golo Kante (for Loftus Cheek, 57) – 6

A much-needed return from the midfield running machine after being absent since August 14. Rust made him miss a babysitter eight minutes after coming on.

Noni Madueke (for Mudryk, 57) – 5

In the 64th minute, curled a 20-yard curl just wide.

Conor Gallagher (for Kovacic, 80) – 6

Was sent on late to find a new way forward for the stuttering home side.

Christian Pulisic (for Cucurella, 80) – 6

Late introduction hoping to inject fresh creativity and perhaps a goal threat. But neither came about.
