And Frank Lampard’s side have their hands full in next week’s second leg at Stamford Bridge.

It certainly wasn’t the impact he was hoping for upon his return as Chelsea boss after losing to Wolves at the weekend.

But who put in a strong performance at the Bernabeu?

And did anyone forget a game?

Here’s SunSport’s Anthony Chapman providing his Chelsea player ratings…

KEPA ARRIZABALAGA — 7

Made several decent stops to prevent Real from bagging more.

Kept his nerve in a hostile environment and showed why he reclaimed first place.

WESLEY FOFANA—4

Got an early yellow card for a stupid foul.

Had a headache from Vinicius Jr throughout the game and wasn’t his usual reliable self.

THIAGO SILVA — 6

Had a good fight with Karim Benzema in the back.

But the immediate return from injury showed as he struggled to match the pace of Real’s attack.

KALIDOU KOULIBALY — 5

Occasionally a physical presence but Real’s clever runs gave him headless chicken vibes at times.

Chelsea can definitely see an improvement in him this summer.

A few dangerous drives down the right flank early on.

But in the end, Fofana had to help out as Vinicius Jr.’s influence grew.

N’GOLO EDGE – 5

He looked rusty as he couldn’t match Luka Modric’s midfield energy.

Didn’t make his impact on the game noticeable.

ENZO FERNANDEZ — 6

Tried to dictate the game early on as he found plenty of space.

But the influence quickly waned as Real’s intense press became active.

MATEO KOVACIC — 5

Quiet return to the Croatian’s former club.

Match some decent passes but the lack of attacking threat meant Blues were always close in the final third.

BEN CHILWELL-3

Was very calm as he was held off by Federico Valverde and Dani Carvajal before being sent straight off in the 59th minute.

Not the performance he expected after signing the new contract.

JOAO FELIX — 5

Quiet game by his standards on a mixed return to the Spanish capital.

Some clever turns and dribbles but missed a glorious scoring opportunity in the opening minutes and needs to improve the finish.

RAHEEM STERLING — 6

Missed several good chances to get on the scoreboard tonight.

Had a good time on the ball and helped stretch Real’s defense with some runs of darts.

SUBS:

Marc Cucurella (for Koulibaly, 54′) – 5th

The Spaniard tried to impress and made a huge mistake leaving Chilwell exposed for the red card, but made a decent block or two later.

Kai Havertz (for Felix, 65′) – 5th

Completely isolated as he tried to save the ball but never really got a grip on Real’s defence.

Trevoh Chalobah (for Sterling, 65′) – 6th

Difficult question to keep Real’s attack in check but the academy man was proud.
