Chelsea owner Todd Boehly “made a late offer to buy Lyon” this summer but missed out on Crystal Palace investor John Textor

CHELSEA owner Todd Boehly reportedly tried to buy French club Lyon earlier this month.

But the American businessman missed out on a majority stake in the Ligue 1 team to Crystal Palace investor John Textor.

Boehly has revealed his desire for a multi-club network around the world, much like City Football Group, the owners of Manchester City.

CFG own Premier League champions City as well as 10 other teams.

And after taking over Chelsea at the end of May, Boehly was looking for a deal to buy Lyon, according to The Guardian earlier this month.

And that’s despite the fact that Palace part-owner Textor agreed a deal to buy a majority stake in the club back in June.

Despite this, Boehly is said to have tried to get his way, but ultimately failed in his bid to buy a second football team.

According to the French newspaper L’Equipe, the takeover of Textor in Lyon should be completed in the coming days.

Boehly appointed CFG’s former chief commercial officer, Tom Glick, as the man to lead its expansion into multi-club network clubs.

Clubs in Brazil, Belgium and Portugal are potential targets for the Blues.

The Blues have reportedly already held talks about buying teams in Brazil and Portugal, but Boehly has yet to expand his network.

Brazil’s Santos, which developed players like Pele and Neymar, are believed to have rebuffed advances from Boehly and Glick.

Glick has close ties with Textor, who own Brazilian team Botafogo and Belgian club RWD Molenbeek, as well as with Lyon.

And Textor is said to have been surprised by Chelsea’s efforts to buy teams in the same leagues as his own.
