CHELSEA are in talks over a potential transfer swap with RB Leipzig involving Timo Werner and Josko Gvardiol.
It’s reported that the Blues are happy with the prospect of their striker’s departure while they remain in dire need of another centre-back.
The two clubs held initial talks over the weekend, with Leipzig putting “more pressure” on Werner than other sides.
The wanton German left the Red Bull Arena in 2020 but has struggled since moving to London.
Now reports suggest he could be set for a dream return – while Chelsea could sign another defender as part of the deal.
transfer guru Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Leipzig are now pushing Timo Werner more than Juventus after Sunday’s clash with Chelsea – still to be seen if there is room for a swap deal.
“He is the main target for RB Leipzig and is leading the race against Juventus. No direct talks with Newcastle yet.”
The journalist previously tweeted that “[Todd] Boehly [is] ready to let Timo Werner go on loan,” and Gvardiol now topped the list of defenders who targeted them, alongside Wes Fofana.
Werner scored 78 goals in 127 games in his four years at Leipzig but has struggled to find his scoring form since.
The 26-year-old had caused a stir in pre-season when he hinted he could be happy “anywhere”, not just at Stamford Bridge.

His boss Thomas Tuchel later hit back: “I’m surprised, I would be very happy as a young man if I had a contract with Chelsea Football Club.”
Meanwhile, Gvardiol has impressed since arriving at Leipzig in 2020 and is seen as a contender to remedy Chelsea’s defensive deficiencies.
The 20-year-old and Leicester’s Fofana appear to be the club’s main targets following the signing of experienced Kalidou Koulibaly.
Chelsea have to readjust their plans and lose to Barcelona in the signing of Jules Kounde.
