Chelsea have fended off competition from Brentford for talent Charlton Mason Burstow, who has been likened to Jermain Defoe

On transfer deadline day, Chelsea tried to reach an agreement to sign EFL’s hottest talent, Mason Burstow.

Charlton’s rookie18 years old, has enjoyed a huge rise after spending his time at youth levels in the non-league leagues Welling United and Maidstone United.

Burstow signs for Chelsea on transfer deadline day

He joined the Addicks in 2000, and introduced himself sensationally by scoring for the club with FIRST TOUCH in professional football during the Papa Johns Trophy clash with Crawley.

Since then, he has continued to provide a threat up front – scoring six times in his first 16 games for the South London side.

It was that form that encouraged Chelsea to welcome young players – paid about 2 million pounds to secure his service, beating Premier League rivals Brentford, before loaning him back to the League One team.

They have their eyes on him

Burstow was spotted early by Chelsea scouts when he was playing for Maidstone at the age of 16.

After participating in a game, ironically facing off against Charlton, he was invited to Cobham to train.

Although they have left the chance to sign him, Burstow remains on the club’s radar.

In 2020, the Plumstead-born poacher joined local club Charlton on a two-year scholarship deal.

He will soon be praised by head coach Anthony Hayes developing Charlton for his ability.

Ambitious and full of potential

Back in December, Hayes talked about Burstow’s ambitions and his game.

“He’s someone we see as a player with high potential,” Hayes told South London Press.

“I don’t want to put pressure on him because I know he sets his own goals.

“I know there are a lot of goals in terms of assists and goals, as well as being in the first team.

“What I think he is, is a centre-back who can do everything. He can run away from the ball and he can jump in and link the play.”

While News Shopper journalist Henry Tomlinson compared Burstow to former West Ham and Tottenham hotshot Jermain Defoe.

“He has that rare talent of just wanting to prove himself, he doesn’t stop running, he doesn’t have a chip on his shoulder, he just wants to do the best he can every time he plays,” Tomlinson told . Chelsea Chronicle.

“I’ve seen him live a few times and he reminds me a bit of Defoe in his youth.

“He moves between the lines, he has a bit of poaching finish and he’s a bit taller. His goal against Fleetwood was a header.

“So maybe, he could have a more potential or a little more well-rounded skill set than Defoe, it would be a great career if he could compete with Defoe because obviously, He’s one of the best Premier League goalscorers of all time.”

Lots of goals

Like Defoe, Burstow has the same ruthlessness in front of goal, which translates very well for Charlton’s first team.

Since former manager Nigel Adkins gave him his debut in August – in the 6-1 demolition of Crawley – Mason has not looked back.

Back in November, he scored in the FA Cup in a 4-0 win over Havant & Waterlooville.

Last month, he scored a consolation goal in a 2-1 loss to Crewe Alexandra in the next tournament.

He then continued that with a strike in a 2–0 win over Fleetwood.

Logically, Chelsea have decided to let Burstow play the rest of this season with the Addicks as he continues to develop.

Then comes the hard work, where he will turn Neil Bath’s Blues Academy.

You won’t pass Burstow, who is over-eager, to thrive there.
