The Benfica midfielder will be the EIGHTH sign with the money-mad blues for a month.

Owner Todd Boehly has now spent more money than any other club in a single transfer window ALWAYS.

The deal dwarfs the £100m Manchester City spent on Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish in 2021.

And Chelsea’s expenses for the last two windows total a whopping £602million when add-ons and loan fees are included.

Fernandez, 22, had a doctor’s visit in Lisbon yesterday after talks stalled over the payment structure and it was suggested that the Argentine player would remain on loan at Benfica until the end of the season.

He signed one EIGHT AND A HALF Annual contract running until June 2031.

Chelsea could end up paying up to £110m in extras for a player who has scored just two goals this season.

It’s reported they’ll shell out £40m upfront, with the remainder of the whopping fee spread over five more installments.

Fernandez, 22, cost the Portuguese leaders just £10million from River Plate last summer.

The Argentina side are set to transfer a whopping £26.5million from a sell-on clause, their own record-breaking transfer.

Fernandez, who was named Young Player of the Tournament at the 2022 World Cup, was January’s No. 1 target for Chelsea chairman Boehly.

They made their first move early last month but the deal has taken so long to negotiate for Chelsea since they signed seven players.

Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto and borrower Joao Felix all joined to take Boehly’s mammoth spending to £325.9m including extras in the winter window.

Boehly also spent a whopping £259.1million on upfront payments over the summer.

Fernandez was keen to join Chelsea all along and even said goodbye to Benfica teammates yesterday morning, insisting ‘a deal will be made’.
