At the Shed End the banner read ‘Welcome Home Super Frank’ while one at the opposite end of the site – the Matthew Harding Stand – was an even larger sign reading ‘Frank Lampard’s Blue & White Army’.

Although the game against Brighton was Lampard’s third responsibility in his second tenure as Chelsea manager, it was his first time in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

His last game in the home dressing room was a 3-1 FA Cup win over Luton Town in January 2021, although he has lost to Aston Villa and Real Madrid in a week since his return.

In a lightning fast start to Saturday afternoon’s game, Brighton went close and then hit the bar before Conor Gallagher scored with a big deflection to end the Blues’ dry spell.
