Chelsea could blame the FA Cup curse

CHELSEA suffered a shootout heartbreak at the hands of Liverpool for the second time this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are still in for a remarkable quadruple after both Cesar Azpilicueta and Mason Mount failed from the point at Wembley, giving the Reds a first FA Cup under the German.

Chelsea must feel an FA Cup curse has gripped west London after their third straight final defeat.

The desperate frustration for Thomas Tuchel, the Chelsea manager, will be that it could have ended long before that.

Chelsea had to ride their luck at times – bouncing back after a terrible start in which Luis Diaz could have scored twice.

But they had plenty of chances of their own and were too wasteful when it really mattered.

American Christian Pulisic missed good chances agonizingly wide in both halves while he should have played a better ball for Marcos Alonso in the first half.

Alonso sped through but the pass forced a hard touch allowing Alisson to save.

Pulisic was Chelsea’s most prolific player – but missed when it counted.

Tuchel is also to blame. With Liverpool leaving plenty of space thanks to their high line, Pulisic had shown that pace could hurt them.

Still, Tuchel decided to keep a confident Timo Werner on the bench throughout, turning instead to Hakim Ziyech and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to bolster the attacking line.

Losing on penalties again is incredibly cruel, especially when a Chelsea legend, Azpilicueta, and another in the making, Mount, are the ones letting the Blues down.

Tuchel’s real job at Chelsea is to ensure they mix with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table next season.

After four draws from four games against Liverpool this season, Chelsea will feel close.

To take the next step, they need a killer touch at crucial moments. Chelsea could blame the FA Cup curse
