Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hints at a transfer exit for forgotten man Ross Barkley this month with little future at the club

THOMAS TUCHEL has refused to rule out the possibility that Ross Barkley is guaranteed to leave Chelsea in the January transfer window.

The 28-year-old midfielder has started just four games for the European champions so far this season – only one of which has come in the Premier League.

Due to lack of time to play games, Barkley has linked with a loan back to former team Everton this month.

He signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Chelsea in January 2018 – meaning he has 18 months left on his existing contract.

He made just 98 appearances for the Blues in that span, scoring 11 goals and providing 11 assists.

And Tuchel has not quelled the rumors of a departure ahead of their FA Cup clash with Chesterfield on Sunday.

The Chelsea boss said: ‘We have not discussed it yet [a loan deal]. It depends on what Ross wants and what possibilities there are and what makes sense. Let’s see.

“There’s always a chance, unlike the FA Cup and this is your chance. There’s always a chance to come on, especially with so many injuries and Covid cases.

“The situation hasn’t changed, not for Ross, not for anyone else.”

However, despite Barkley’s lack of opportunities so far in the 2021-22 campaign, Tuchel may still feel a need for him as an option for the second half of the season.

This is because the Blues have suffered a number of injuries as well as various Covid outbreaks.

And the German coach stressed the importance of a squad with depth ahead of a busy period for the team.

Monitor 5-1 win over Chesterfield, Tuchel added: “We have tough games coming up.

“It’s a different degree of intensity if you’re playing Premier League teams or playing against a fifth-place team.

“It’s important to share the minutes and give some players rest to be as fit as possible for the upcoming matches.

“Let’s see. We have to constantly adapt because the situation can change any day with the testing process, and from there we go.”

Chelsea are gearing up for three games in six days, starting with a clash with Spurs in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final – a match they host. Leading 2-0 after their win at Stamford Bridge.

They will then visit Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday, before visiting Brighton three days later.
