According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romanothe west Londoners will land Shields ahead of them after his impressive work at Saints and Manchester City.

According to talkSPORT, Chelsea were particularly impressed with the signing of Romeo Lavia, who joined St Mary’s from City last summer.

Lavia arrived with three other young talents, Juan Larios, Sam Edozie and Gavin Bazunu.

Shields only joined Southampton in July after spending nine years at Etihad in City’s scouting and recruiting department.

The veteran scout has also previously held similar roles at Crystal Palace and Fulham.

But his imminent departure has not pleased Southampton, who are unhappy with the way the situation has been handled.

As such, Chelsea may have to wait half a year before Shields takes on his new role as Saints are unwilling to let him go before his six-month notice period is up.

It comes amid efforts by the two-time European champions to sign ex-RB Leipzig boss Christopher Vivell as the new technical director after he was sacked by the Bundesliga club.
