A total of 8,000 fans were to travel from England to Spain to watch the showdowns in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Chelsea met Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday, 24 hours before City’s return leg at Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano.

And video footage posted to social media showed rival supporters facing each other, shouting and chanting.

Things then spilled over as punches were thrown and drinks flew before the notoriously stubborn Madrid police rushed in with batons and shields to restore order.

Blues supporters were heartbroken to see their team’s valiant effort ultimately fall just short.

Chelsea led 3-0 at the Bernabeu and went through 4-3 on aggregate.

But Rodrygo forced extra time and that man Karim Benzema headed in the winner to propel Los Blancos through to the semis.

There they meet either City or Atletico.

Kevin de Bruyne scored the only goal of the first leg in Manchester meaning it’s well balanced going to Wanda tomorrow night.

City know a draw will be enough to win them in a partially closed stadium after Uefa last week charged Atletico with “discriminatory behaviour” by fans at the Etihad.

However, Atletico have NEVER lost a Champions League game as they lost the first leg away by one goal.
