Chelsea and Inter reach AGREEMENT that Romelu Lukaku will be loaned out for £7m plus benefits

CHELSEA have agreed to send Romelu Lukaku, who signed the club record, back to Inter Milan on a one-year loan for just £7million.

Belgium striker Lukaku, who joined the Blues from Inter for a whopping £97.5million just ten months ago, will also take a hefty pay cut to seal the deal.

The two clubs agreed on Tuesday night on a move that includes surcharges and means Chelsea will not pay any of the striker’s wages next season.

The deal is an initial fee of £7m with up to £3.5m in performance-related add-ons, with Lukaku raising its wages from €12m (£10.3m) to €8m (6, £87m) cuts to push through the move.

There will be no purchase option or commitment at the end of next summer’s loan as Lukaku has to undergo his medical treatment next week.

Lukaku’s move to Stamford Bridge last summer will go down as one of the most expensive in Premier League history.

The former Manchester United hitman, 29, enjoyed a stellar campaign at Inter the penultimate season as he won Serie A under Antonio Conte.

He never seemed fully convinced of a move back to Chelsea, which he joined as a teenager in 2011, but eventually made the move in August.

Lukaku has struggled with injuries and Covid and has struggled to fit into Thomas Tuchel’s system.

He did nothing to endear himself to the German manager with a smashing interview in December in which the striker revealed he was “not happy” at the club and wanted to return to Inter “in the near future”.

Now the ex-Everton ace has his wish, provided he passes his medical and is expected back in Milan next week for an official unveiling.

While Lukaku’s loan spells one of the most disastrous transfers of all time, the benefit of agreeing to let him go now is that Chelsea can now proceed with signing new players.

Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling is a top target, while Everton’s Richarlison and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele are also in Tuchel’s sights in attack.

But the Blues, now owned by Todd Boehly, also need defensive reinforcements following the free transfers of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, while captain Cesar Azpilicueta could also leave.

Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is a long-term target, while Lens right-back Jonathan Clauss is also admired.
