Cheering England stars return to training after Italy’s famous win as Kane relaxes after breaking the goals record

MAN first flew into space when England beat Italy last year… until Thursday night.

And after making a huge leap forward in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, the Three Lions covered another huge stretch in training the next day – to ease the tension.

Jimmy Greaves sealed England’s late 3-2 win in Rome in May 1961 – a month after Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin had traveled into history and space.

Greaves was the Three Lions’ top scorer at the time and ended up scoring 44 international goals.

And Kane marked Thursday’s remarkable night in Naples by setting a new record 54 when he went past Wayne Rooney’s mark with a penalty.

So it was understandable that the England skipper relaxed on a fitness mat at Spurs Lodge on Friday with a thoughtful smile on his face.

Declan Rice and Jack Grealish upped the ante as they headed into training with double grins, with the West Ham midfielder wrapping his arm around the Manchester City winger.

In fact, it’s rare that you’ll see a more lively training camp.

But Gareth Southgate’s men have less than 72 hours between Thursday’s success and Sunday’s second qualifier against Ukraine at Wembley Stadium.

So it was important that they put out the tribes.

Keeper Jordan Pickford, red card victim Luke Shaw and the impressive presenter were snapped while stretching their limbs in tension-reducing exercises.

However, Shaw will be suspended for this weekend’s game – following his remarkable dismissal for two bookings in 54 seconds.

In contrast, Kane is sure to lead the team again.

And after almighty celebrations greeted his record-breaking penalty on Thursday, the Tottenham striker admitted it’s still difficult to understand.

He posted on Instagram: “Madness madness. Not even a dream, I didn’t even dream of doing something like that, so very proud.

“A big thank you to the team, the staff, the fans, everyone involved. my family at home

“It’s a special moment that I’ll never forget and to win the game, the first win in Italy in God knows how long… Just a very special night for me and the team.”

Even Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini joined in the praise for Kane.

And Italy midfielder Marco Verratti was equally generous with his comments on a player who could succeed Kane as England skipper.

The PSG star said of the highly sought-after Rice: “He has a wonderful attitude and he’s very young so he has a lot of room for improvement.”

“He brings great balance and form to the team and he has wonderful physical attributes.

“He’s number six, a defensive midfielder that England really need.

“I’m sure he’ll end up with a top team because I’ve played him many times, he never gives up.”
