On Jan. 11, 2023, Kimbrough died in Culver City, California, his son told The New York Times.
The actor was widely known for his work on the 1990s TV show Murphy Brown, set in a fictional television news magazine. Kimbrough played the quirky longtime TV host Jim Dial alongside the title actress Candice Bergen.
He was a main cast member for the show’s entire 10 seasons from 1988 to 1998 and returned to the role as a recurring character for the show’s 2018 revival, TMZ said.
Before television, however, Kimbrough was an avid stage performer, starring in the original Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim’s Musical Company.

Several gigs, big and small, dotted the actor’s career from the ’70s through the ’90s, but it was the last decade that saw him take a big second wind with his lead vocals.
Hit animated shows like Recess, Hercules, Pinky and the Brain, and even The Angry Beavers all made use of the late star’s voice character skills.
Kimbrough leaves a son named John.
