Cesar Azpilicueta inspires Blues win over Lille as Jorginho struggles in new system

Inspired by captain Cesar Azpilicueta, the Blues came from behind to win the night and seal a 4-1 aggregate victory.

But it was not a night without worries as Lille pressed from the box and scored the equalizer.

Chelsea have proven why they are so successful in this league under Thomas Tuchel, who continues to win results amid Chelsea’s problems off the pitch.

It was a stellar team performance with the only negative being Andreas Christensen’s first injury.

Here’s how Simon Phillips rates the European champions’ performance in Lille.

Edouard Mendy – 6 years old

Move in the right direction to take the penalty but can’t save it. There were a few other hits to tackle that he did well, though, some of his distributions sometimes had problems.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 9

His determination and speed of work were crazy again tonight. Make some good tackles and blocks and contribute as much in attacks as possible. His run to get Mount’s pass to score was fantastic and he finished well.

Andreas Christensen – 6

There was a reasonable first half hour but unfortunately got injured and had to leave the field.

Thiago Silva – 7

Sometimes it’s a bit too calm and slow to make the pass, but even so, no one plays attacking from the back better than Silva and he needed a lot tonight when Lille was pressing so hard.

Antonio Rudiger – 7

Intense and energetic as usual and his leadership was needed for Chelsea tonight. Get the ball out really well when there’s no pass to ease the pressure.

Marcos Alonso – 6

Some of the strokes are neat, but there are also some poor quality photos. He was there but didn’t really bring much to the game. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough speed to be an effective full-back.

Jorginho – 6

It was silly indeed to give a penalty in the first half, but he redeemed himself with a lovely pass for Pulisic to score the equalizer.

Not his best game, though.

N’Golo Kante – 6

Not one of his best games really in terms of what he usually delivers, but he didn’t quite hold the ball well enough in the first half at least but improved a lot in the second when he He played back a little deeper. .

Matteo Kovacic – 8

Run the real show and never give it away. His lovely close control and dribbling are back to being amazing. Well done to help Chelsea keep the ball under pressure.

You think he’s off half the time, which is shocking, must have been injured.

Christian Pulisic – 8

His equalizer was very good and kept his composure when he passed the goal. I would have liked to see him out wider so there were times when he was uncomfortable, but had a very good game overall and was moved out indeed.

Kai Havertz – 8

His equalizer was very good and kept his composure when he passed the goal.

I would have liked to see him out wider so there were times when he was uncomfortable, but had a very good game overall and was moved out indeed.

Registration

Trevoh Chalobah (for Christensen, 33′) – 6

Had to come on as an early substitute for Christensen, who was injured. Got booked almost immediately for a silly challenge and looked a bit annoyed after that save, some precise forward hitting.

Mason Mount (for Kovacic, 45′) – 8

The impact was really good when he came on and provided a lovely assist for Azpilicueta to score. Full of energy and really direct.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (for Jorginho, 74′) – 7

Strong on the ball, intensity and some nice little touches.

Romelu Lukaku (for Pulisic, 74′) – 7

He looks pretty good on the pitch, in good physical shape and has some good relations with Havertz.

Hakim Ziyech (for Havertz, 83′) – Not applicable

Not long enough to impact the game.
