Celebrate her reign by raising your knees and toasting Her Majesty

PRINCE Charles paid his deeply personal tribute to the Queen last night when he greeted her as “Mummy”.

But he also spoke for the nation with his heartfelt “thank you” to the Queen. She is the mother of the United Kingdom.

Projected onto Buckingham Palace, moving images of the highlights of her 70-year reign offered an extraordinary glimpse into a time of unprecedented change.

Anyone magically teleported from 1952 to modern Britain would be bewildered by the brave new world they found themselves in.

But rest assured they would recognize the Queen herself – the world’s best-known and most enduring sovereign figurehead.

Amidst all the turmoil, she has remained an unwavering beacon of selfless service and perseverance.

Her own coronation was watched by a few million people gathered around a relatively small number of flickering black-and-white televisions.

The next will be seen by billions glued to mobile phones and social media.

Her meetings with the likes of Nelson Mandela and Martin McGuinness demonstrated her role in resolving seemingly intractable conflicts.

Her incantation of Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again” during the darkest days of the pandemic showcased her unique ability to lift our spirits.

And because she’s seen so much, she allows us to put such highs and lows into perspective of the story.

Her inability to attend all of her Platinum Jubilee events adds a sense of poignancy.

Even as we celebrate, we know that the day will come when we realize how much she is missed.

Therefore, today the nation must unite to celebrate their reign by enjoying street festivals, processions and pennants.

There is no better way to express our gratitude – and there will never be a knee high like this again.

Ministers blame airlines for not hiring enough workers.

But today we’re finding that officials are taking too long to perform critical security checks on new airport staff.

Before the government points the finger, it needs to put its own house in order.

There is no excuse for officers working from home sitting on their couches preventing travelers from taking to the skies.

It’s about time they got their own rocket launch.
