Buster koala moon is always upbeat (Matthew McConaughey) is back in “Sing 2.” This time, Buster and his band of talented singing animals are headed for the big time and are desperate to land a gig at the Crystal Tower Theater in the glamorous Redshore City. .
There’s only one problem – Buster has promised ruthless tycoon Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale) that their new show will include reclusive rock star Clay Calloway (Bono). Now he has to convince Calloway to join the show and create something spectacular.
NBC sat down with McConaughey to find out why Buster is so upbeat.
“He’s relentlessly optimistic, and I believe optimism is the means to survival,” McConaughey said. “It’s not a stupid idea at all. That is we have to be optimistic.”
Scarlett Johansson and Tori Kelly reprise their roles as Ash and Meena. Ash is tasked with convincing Calloway to perform in their show at the Crystal Theatre. Johansson said she has been friends with Bono for a long time and is not too worried about their duet. She said she practiced in her car.
“When I did the duet ‘Stuck In A Moment,’ I basically just sang out loud in my car for a few weeks,” says Johansson. “And I went into the studio and was like, this is what I’m doing in my car (laughs).”
And the work sounds incredible. Johansson’s songs with Bono are a definite highlight of the film.
Another highlight is Tori Kelly’s beautiful vocals on “I Say A Little Prayer” with Pharrel Williams. In fact, all of the music in “Sing 2” is funnier, more pop, and more varied than its predecessor. Screenwriter/director Garth Jennings says it was intentional.
“To be able to pick songs of this quality, which means a lot to people, that’s as good as it gets,” Jennings said.
Someone you won’t hear singing on “Sing 2”: McConaughey.
“Let’s talk this over with the director,” he joked. “There’s a glitch going on here.”
And if he could sing any song if there was “Sing 3?”
“Creedence. Clean water. Resurgence,” he said realistically. “Revive some of their tunes into a modern pop beat.”
Fascinating idea. Currently, there are many highlights and positives in “Sing 2.” It hits theaters on December 22 and stars Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Tori Kelly, Reese Witherspoon and Bono.
