Carrick should be the boss of Man Utd, it’s ridiculous that they brought in a temporary to replace the interim

MICHAEL CARRICK is one of the smartest footballers I know, so it really goes without saying that he won’t be the next Manchester United manager.

But the fact that United has brought Ralf Rangnick is temporary for temporary replacement, before they get the man they really want, it’s ridiculous.

I’ve never heard anything so stupid in my life, no matter how you look at it.

And then we hear that if Rangnick wins the Champions League, he might end up staying as a manager, instead of a couple of years as a consultant, director or whatever. .

So a temp manager can become a full-time manager, meaning the manager they want full-time now may not be who they want full-time in six months.

If you’re not confused by all that, I’m sure it is! And we’re talking about one of the biggest clubs in the world here. Is crazy.

If they want Mauricio Pochettino, as we have come to believe, there are ways and means to make that happen.

And if they had to wait for him, they shouldn’t have pushed Michael aside and put someone on top of him for a few months. That tell you anything? We don’t have faith in you?

I know Carrick very well. I took him to West Ham when he was 12 and was about an hour away from signing him for Portsmouth, but I’ll come back to that.

The point is, he knows United inside and out. He has a great football brain – you don’t play the game the way he did unless you understand that.

If they need to bring in anyone before appointing a manager, then find a coach by his side, because they have been a downhill man since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left.

They should have just gone for someone with experience, but let Michael run the show until then.

He won’t be the first to take a chance and then, who knows, could make himself a great manager.

People would look back on that and call him, if he did a good job. No chance of that now.

I really think United missed a trick in not hosting Antonio Conte when he was free, because the writing was on the wall for a long time with Ole.

I don’t have these things about Conte having only ever stayed at clubs for a couple of years.

If you’re the manager of Manchester United, there aren’t many places where you’ll advance after that.

Daniel Levy would certainly see the danger, which is why he brought him to Spurs so quickly. He’ll know it when he gets rid of the Nuno Espirito Santo.

It will be interesting to see the reaction if Michael gets the results at Chelsea today. That would be a tough move for Rangnick to follow.

I always spent a lot of time with Carrick and when I was at Portsmouth I signed him from West Ham for around £2.4m.

It was all agreed and he was actually halfway to a medical when I got a call from his agent saying Spurs wanted him.

Jacques Santini was the manager at the time but had no clue about this. Levy is the one who made this deal.

Daniel told me when he saw I wanted Michael, having worked with him at West Ham, there must be something about him and at the price point, it’s worth the chance.

So Michael and his agent came back at the next exit, to Spurs and from there he ended up with United.

He’s also a player, he controls the game from the center, sees everything, can make passes and dictates speed.

So don’t tell me he doesn’t have the brains to be a boss, because he has.

But whether it’s him or Rangnick, a club like United shouldn’t have talked to each other in the first place.

I never received a call from them when I was a manager, but if I did it would be difficult to refuse.

If they make an offer, 99% of the world will hop on a plane, get in a car, whatever it takes – but you’ll be there the next day.

It’s not an easy one-minute job, but it’s a club, it’s a job, it’s an incredible opportunity.

I’m really disappointed that they didn’t stick with Michael until then.
