Palmer, who had 18 caps for England, completed the race before rushing himself to hospital where he underwent tests to find the problem.
But now he has reassured people he is back home, although doctors are unsure of the nature of the concern.
Speaking of Twitterhe said: “Great news, I’ve been released and I’m back home.
“Thank you to all the staff at #hallamshirehospital, the tests have all come back negative. So it remains a mystery as to what happened.
“Further testing needs to be done. Thank you for all your kind messages.
@LucyPal16907599 ❤️.”
Palmer raised money for several charities but had a problem with his heart in the first mile.
Nevertheless, he was able to finish the race together with his wife Lucy Kirkby-Palmer.
After being rushed to the hospital, Palmer tweeted: “Listen to your body! If something is wrong, fix it – please don’t let it and carry on as usual. Your body is talking to you ❤️ don’t ignore it.”
Palmer intends to run the London Marathon on April 23 to raise money for Cavendish Cancer Care.
He has had problems with his heart before and underwent life-saving five-hour surgery for a heart condition in 2016.
He said of the incident: “I was fighting for my life. I could feel the air leaving my body. My heart was pounding as if trying to get out of my chest and it was getting worse and worse.
“I’d always been pretty easy on death. If he comes, he comes, that was my attitude, but now I was like ‘f*** me’ and all the things I should have done were running through my head.
“Someone yelled ‘He’s going to arrest,’ and someone else yelled ‘quickly,’ and I was lying on the wagon with my arms and legs over the sides thinking it was a stupid way to die.”
Palmer’s professional career spanned 19 years and eight clubs.
His main appearance came in Sheffield on Wednesday, where he made 191 appearances and won the 1991 League Cup.
He also finished second in the competition with the Owls in 1993 and again with Leeds in 1996.
Palmer also missed out on FA Cup Final success after losing the 1993 final to Arsenal.
