Drug Enforcement Administration officials reportedly recorded him agreeing to a £560,000 bung as part of a plot to smuggle thousands of kilos of coke into the US.

News of his arrest spread as the islands, which are known for banking secrecy, face allegations that corrupt officials stole a £50million aid package sent to Britain in the wake of a hurricane in 2017 .

Secretary of State Liz Truss is said to have been watching developments closely as Fahie appeared in court in Miami last night.

The father of three was arrested Thursday along with BVI port boss Oleanvine Maynard and their son Kadeem.

According to court documents, the three thought they would make £6.2million from the deal.

The British Virgin Islands, where the Queen is head of state, has a population of just 30,000.
