Cardiff put Gareth Bale on the transfer next year after the Welsh icon snubbed the hometown club about joining MLS club LAFC

CARDIFF plan to make a sensational offer for former Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale next summer.

Bale left the Bernabeu on a free transfer earlier this month after nine trophy-filled years with the Spanish giants and was promptly taken on by MLS club Los Angeles FC.

Cardiff were one of several clubs keen to sign the five-time Champions League winners and plan to renew their interest in the city’s local hero next summer.

Owner Vincent Tan told talkSPORT: “Cardiff owner Vincent Tan told talkSPORT: “His contract is for 12 months, let’s see what happens.

“Maybe by then, Gareth probably wants to come back and come home and serve his country, serve Cardiff, his hometown.

“He has never played at Cardiff, he and his family are fans of the club.

“Hopefully in 12 months he’s still young, he’s only going to be 34, some players come back and play until they’re 40.

“So he has a few more years to play and hopefully after that he will come and play for Cardiff [contract with LAFC finishes].”

Tan was delighted at the prospect of bringing 32-year-old Bale back to his hometown club, adding: “We were very, very keen, he would have been a huge coup for us.

“It would have been great for Gareth to play for his hometown, all Welsh people would be delighted to see Gareth return home and play for Cardiff.

“Personally, I think LAFC’s offer was too attractive for him to turn down. But originally he really wanted to come, the money wasn’t the question.

“We made him a good offer but ultimately it was very difficult to compete when there are a lot of big American advertisers, a lot of commercial deals that have been very good for Gareth.

“Initially Gareth wasn’t really about the money, he just wanted to help Cardiff and Wales. That’s why we were able to negotiate with him.

“He tried his best to join us but I think LAFC’s offer was just too big to turn down. We tried our best but we failed.”

Bale confirmed his adventure in the US on Monday and admitted he is enjoying the next chapter in his career.

He said: “I’m really excited about this move to LAFC.

“This is the right place for me and my family and the right time in my career and I can’t wait to start working as a team and prepare to win more trophies in Los Angeles.”
