The maximum jail term for possession would increase from five to seven years, with life imprisonment.

The Home Office confirmed last night that the cannabis classification was “required to be reviewed”.

Allies of Braverman say she opposes calls to decriminalize the drug.

She believes deterrence is key to halting the growing popularity of cannabis among teenagers.

A source told the Sunday Times: “We have to scare people.”

It comes after a group of PCCs argued at last week’s Conservative conference that new cannabis health data showed there was a need to reassess the sentences.

Dorset PCC David Sidwick slammed: “If you look at young people in treatment, cannabis is the number one drug.”

PM Liz Truss will not support any change in the law.
