Canelo Alvarez would fight Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk despite FOUR STONE’s weight difference

CANELO ALVAREZ would still fight Oleksandr Usyk despite their FOUR STONE weight difference.

Canelo, 32, has never boxed higher than the 12th 7-pound light heavyweight mark and was recently relegated to the 12th super middle division.

But in the past he has opened the door to take on Usyk, who was 15.11lbs last August when he beat Anthony Joshua, 33,.

That means there’s almost a four stone difference between the pound-for-pound stars.

Canelo lost to light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, 32, last May but returned to beat Gennady Golovkin, 40, in their trilogy in September.

The Mexican is now in talks to face Britain’s John Ryder, 34, this May before facing Bivol again.

But promoter Eddie Hearn claimed Canelo’s confidence was so high he still believes the Division Four champion would face Usyk.

Hearn told DAZN, “I never felt – I never doubted – there was a fighter he wouldn’t fight.

“I feel like because of what Canelo has brought to the sport, because of the risks he’s taken, because of the fights he’s been in, Canelo really wants these champions to do the same and follow the same path.

“People like David Benavidez have to make a statement to fight a fight, I think. Everything is: ‘No problem, no problem.’

“After Usyk beat AJ, I kind of joked with him – ‘No problem, I’ll fight Usyk.’

“Whether you think he made it or you think he has a chance, with all due respect he would really fight Usyk at cruiserweight.

“He fought Bivol at 175. He would have no problem fighting Benavidez at 160.”

Usyk, 36, meets Tyson Fury, 34, in the heavyweight division’s first undisputed decider.

Meanwhile, Hearn strikes a deal that will see Ryder fight for all of Canelo’s unified super middleweight titles.

He said: “Like I said, Canelo’s plan is to fight John Ryder and Dmitry Bivol. I spoke to (Canelo’s coach and manager) Eddy Reynoso last night.

“We are looking at possible venues, of course there are other fights for Canelo Alvarez. We are planning with Eddy and Saul this year and next.”
