Expectations were high when Alvarez entered the fight after a dominating performance over Caleb Plant last November.

The Mexican powerhouse had Plant landed in the infirmary on the occasion – and looked in pristine form on his way to the light heavyweight ring.

But from the start, Bilov’s jab was a big problem for Canelo, who couldn’t get in range to land his power punches.

Frustration grew throughout the fight as Bilov defeated Alvarez with quick counterattacks and excellent moves.

And in the closing stages it became clear that Alvarez needed a knockout – but he looked completely gasped when he failed to land a killer punch.

All three judges scored the fight 115-113 in favor of the Russian, who went into the fight as an outsider.

And a visibly distraught Canelo accepted there were no excuses before calling for a rematch.

Alvarez said: “No excuses today. I lost, he won.”

“He’s a really good fighter. I felt his power, I felt it was a good fight.

“No excuses, that’s what happens in boxing.

“Naturally [I will invoke rematch clause]. It doesn’t end like that.”

The loss is only the second in Alvarez’s illustrious career, which has seen him win world titles in four weight classes.

His pro record now stands at 57-2-2 from his 61 pro fights.

Bilov has defended his WBA strap for the ninth time and will likely have to defend it again in the rematch.

And plans for Canelo to face Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight are on hold for now.

The Russian said: “If you don’t believe in yourself, you won’t achieve anything. Believe in you.

“Thanks Eddie Hearn, and I’m sorry I broke yours [GGG] Plans”
