Canceled Game Of Thrones prequel pilot cost $30 million

If this is so bad for HBO, I dread the thought of how it will be.

A Canceled Game Of Thrones Prequel Pilot Just Doesn't Work, Costing $30 Million

HBO is said to have put away $30 million, a decent movie budget, in Game of Thrones prequel pilots we’ll never see. Entire content has been removed as it is not based on “the premise of the original series”.

Since GoT ended, HBO has been developing two prequels: the upcoming House of the Dragon and another untitled project starring some big names, including Naomi Watts, Jane Goldman and SJ Clarkson. The second book was randomly canceled – but thanks to HBO’s new book “Tinderbox: The Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers” (via Insiders), we finally learned more about why it never happened.

Former WarnerMedia president Bob Greenblatt has revealed the reason why the compelling prequel went wrong. According to him, the company spent more than $30 million on a pilot before the chief executive made the first cut. As Greenblatt recounts, it didn’t seem to work. “I don’t think it delivers on the premise of the original series,” he said, agreeing HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys. “So unfortunately we’ve decided to unplug it. There’s a lot of pressure to get it right.”

The untitled prequel is set thousands of years before the events of the original Game of Thrones, and even before House Targaryen arrives in Westeros, meaning there will be no dragons. This would be a complete start, considering the prequel series we’re getting— House of the Dragon, coming to HBO in 2022 – really revolves around the Targaryens and their fire-breathing pets.

To avoid another costly flop, House of the Dragon was ordered for a full first season. The decision also came from Greenblatt, the book revealed. He’s the one who encouraged Casey Bloys to get the green light and not risk another $30 million for another pilot. “Let’s have a great series that we’re happy with and go for it. Or not,” Greenblatt said. In his opinion, it’s important to continue the successful franchise and get it done quickly, which means getting the series into production as soon as possible..

Hopefully House of the Dragon will live up to its name and possibly even make up for the hasty ending of the main series – mostly because presenters Daniel Weiss and David Benioff get tired of the show they have been monitoring for many years.
